In the wild budgies lay clutches per year during breeding season, provided the conditions are right, and can lay multiple clutches back to back in captivity, however this is not recommended. Budgies are opportunistic breeders and will take any opportunity to lay eggs when the conditions are right. That being said there are a few limits to how many eggs a budgie can lay and chicks they can raise.

A budgie hen female will lay anywhere between 4 — 6 eggs in each clutch. Although this is the average number of eggs she will lay it is not unheard of for budgies to lay less than 4 and sometimes up to 8 or more eggs in a clutch. Budgies have evolved over time to lay only the number of eggs they can efficiently raise as chicks.

Its common that not all eggs in a clutch will hatch, so 4 -6 provides redundancy to compensate for this and for any chicks that may not survive. Anymore than 8 chicks becomes too burdensome for the parents to properly raise and increases the risk of younger chicks getting trampled or becoming malnourished.

Budgie eggs are white, off white or very light gray in color. The average size of a budgie egg is cm 0. They are most often an oval shape and wider at one end, but can occasionally be more circular in shape. Not all eggs in a clutch will be identical. In the wild budgies will lay their eggs in a suitably sized hollow log, tree or fence post. The female does all the incuabating of the eggs, only leaving the nest for quick toilet breaks or to replenish her calcium supplies. If your bird is out most of the day, so the cage is used mostly as a "sleep cage", minimum size might be just fine.

That's around the same size as my cage, and it's a great size for two budgies. Four would be doable, but you would have to put a lot of thought into arranging the cage so the birds all can have their space, as well as lots of out of cage time. Let us know what you decide!
